I'm Back

What a month February turned out to be. With all the snow and my health issues, I'm truly glad it's over. I'm pleased to report that I'm doing much better after 2 hospital stays totally 7 days last month. The last was Feb. 19-22 and was much worse than the first stay. I had 3 heavy duty IV antibiotics given back to back because of hospital acquired pneumonia. Due to how intense the meds were, I developed severe nausea and vomiting which required IV anti nausea meds to get it under control. My blood pressure spiked into the 180-200+range over high 90's to 140+ range. All of this also resulted in horrible headaches. I had to pack my head on ice to relieve the pain from the headaches. I also blew 3 IV vein sites and had to have new IV's started each time to get the meds. So much fun.

The day after I got out of the hospital I started an oral antibiotic (which would have cost $157.+ if my doctor hadn't had samples). When I took the first one, I noticed I felt like I had a walnut in my throat and it was difficult to swallow. I dismissed it as the result of the vomiting in the hospital. The next day I took another one. This time I knew there was a problem. I started feeling the walnut get larger and choked on a bite of food. It also got harder to swallow and my lips began to burn/tingle and itch. I called the doctor and he told me not to take anymore of the antibiotics, go get some Benadryl and take 50mg 3 times a day. The next day I started a different antibiotic. I dodged a bullet (allergic reaction requiring hospitalization) and spent the rest of the week laying low and sleeping a lot.

All that is over now. I am thrilled to SHOUT OUT ..... "I feel MUCH better!!" I'm sleeping well, my breathing is really clear, and I'm truly beginning to feel my energy returning.I had so much help from the girls, family, and friends. We are just finishing up eating food brought in. I'm way behind on laundry, but that will come together with time. I'm just glad to be able to do things again.

Thanks to everyone who looked after me and my little family these past few weeks. I couldn't have done it without everyone. I can't imagine life without all my friends. It's so good to be back!

Young "Love"

Emile has a very special friend in her life these days. I think she's found someone who is nice this time. His name is David and he's a great young man. He doesn't mind coming to our house to "hang out," he doesn't smoke, chew, drink, swear, etc. He DOES help with meal prep, pick up after himself (help load the dishwasher), put the seat down, etc. I enjoy being around him (which is a first.. her other guys I wanted to choke). Much improved. It doesn't hurt that I knew (and liked) his mom long before we ever met him.

Yesterday, for an early Valentine's Day treat, the kids went to Fiesta Mexico for lunch. I actually went along... how fun is that!! It was cute watching them interact.David is very patient with Emile. He's trying to understand her lack of trust in men... and is trying to help her with that.He has a wonderful sense of humor. He seems to be very motivated. But most of all...He truly seems to respect my daughter. We've had the "talk" on a few occasions and we all know what my expectations are. So far they've both conducted themselves appropriately and I have no reason to not trust them at this point in time. That makes me feel happy. Imagine that!

Well done, Emile. Have fun and always remember who you are.

Valentine's Day Early

With Valentine's Day tomorrow, I got to thinking about some of the fun things I've done on past Valentine's Days. I thought first about the different story books I used to read to the girls.
There was CliffordAnd we had BarneyOf course what Hispanic child doesn't have Dora?A fun "catch all" book.And one of my very favorite story books.

I'm certain there are more books around here but these are the ones that stick out in my head. I also thought about when I was a child. Remember when we used to decorate shoe boxes for our valentine's cards to go in?I loved doing that! I'm not sure I ever caught on to the "less is more" way of thinking. My box was generally a train wreck of sorts... but I still loved making it.The valentine's cards were much "simpler" than they are today. We'd hand out cards and have a party complete with cupcakes, brownies, punch, and of course heart shaped conversation candy.

As I got older I received chocolates on Valentine's Day.
It's been 12 years since I got chocolates now. That's ok though. I get special handmade cards from the girls most years. Sometimes I've gotten breakfast in bed... or some other little treat. I've come to realize that for me Valentine's Day is a day to appreciate the loved ones I have in my life. It's fun to remember, but it's way more fun to put my arms around my daughter's and know how blessed I am to have them in my life. That's totally better than any card, candy or flower. Having said that...

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY....

It's A Wrap

A. Emile and Brie cleaning off the van
B. Mom in action with the snow blower!
C. Piles of snow out front of the house.
D. Home Sweet Home after the blizzard.

So we're finally finished with all the snow clean-up for this round of snowstorms/blizzards. My trusty Toro snow blower handled the snow just wonderfully. I wish I had got it out before today. Emile didn't think it could get through snow as deep as we had. I said let's give it a try. The worse thing that could happen is we'd discover it didn't work and have to return to shoveling by hand.We filled the gas tank and it started on the first pull. I think Emile was shocked when it started so easily. We finished the front walks in less than an hour. It took a little longer out back because we had to dig out the van and clear around it... plus part of the alley way where the plow had gone through. Still it took an hour give or take. It really was much easier doing it with the snow blower. I had a blast with it. Vroommmm Vroommmm! The girls thought I was nuts.Who knows, maybe I am just a little off balance. I'm just glad everything is done for now. I'm also not as apprehensive about more snow now that I see how well the snow blower does. All I have to do is make sure I have plenty of gas and 2-cycle blend for it. After that, we're in business!I no longer feel like a suicidal snowman. Life will be ok.

Feb Blizzard Round 2

Here we go again. There's so much snow I'm not even sure where to begin. It's pretty overwhelming to think of how much shoveling we have left to do.

Just for some comparison, here are pictures taken looking east on King St. You can see just how much the snow has piled up.

Once again I had to have Emile up on the roof removing snow. Last night she had to shovel the snow off the bay window roof at 11P, 2A, and again at 7:30A. When the snow got lighter and dryer the roof stopped leaking... Thank Goodness!!! On the second floor roof she had to clear the heat exhaust pipe and knock snow off so it doesn't weigh down and fall off the side of the house.You know it's bad when you have this much snow on top of the roof... not on the ground! Keep in mind, she had cleared the roof on Sunday (less than 48 hours ago).

I hear they're calling for more snow next Monday. Can't wait to see what this one brings. Hopefully it's just a little less.

When it Snows it Pours

Brie came up to me a few minutes ago and said "It's snowing in your bedroom, Mom." Huh. Say what??? "What do you mean it's snowing in my room?" "I hear water dripping in your plant." Grrrrr!!! That can't be good news.When what to my wondering eyes should appear... yep, water dripping from the top of my bay window. Lovely.I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by any of these unpleasant happenings. Such is the price you pay when you purchase a 100+ year old home with "character." Don't get me wrong, I love my house, I just wish I didn't have leaks to fix at this time of the year.

Funnel Cakes

What would life be like without funnel cakes? Just smelling them while they cook reminds you of going to the fair/carnival in early fall... Standing at the vendor's window waiting for your piping hot cake to come up... covered with powdered sugar...Oh, that first delicious bite! Life is instantly good.

Since it's the middle of winter and the ground is covered with snow, I decided to surprise the girls last evening and make funnel cakes. They love it when I do so. It's a special treat when least expected. For those who love funnel cake as much as we do, here's the recipe I use. Have fun bringing the carnival home to you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Funnel Cake
1 Egg
2/3 C Milk
1/4 t Salt
2 T Sugar
1 1/3 C Sifted Flour
3/4 t Baking Powder
Oil
Powdered Sugar
Cinnamon & Sugar
Blend dry ingredients together. Beat egg, add milk. Pour into dry mixture. Mix well, adding more milk as needed to make batter pour easily (thin but not too runny). Using a funnel (or Ziploc bag with a corner cut off) pour batter into hot grease (375°) in circular motion. Fry until golden brown. Carefully turn over using tongs; fry approximately 1 more minute. Remove from grease; place on a plate covered with paper towel to drain.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar (or topping of your choice).
Enjoy!
A Little Bit of Snow
Oh the weather outside is frightful.... You can say that again! What a day it turned out to be. We knew we had a pretty big storm coming, but I was truly surprised at just how big it turned out to be. The snow started flying around 1PM on Friday but didn't stick to the roads badly until around 7:30ish. After that it started piling up fast! By this morning it was crazy. Governor Rendell even declared a State of Emergency for PA. The total accumulation in our area was 27". While the girls shoveled, Samantha had a ball running through the paths... or leaping through the snow.She loved every moment of it!Brie seemed to be enjoying herself somewhat too.Just for a perspective, today this chair is buried somewhere under all that snow Brie is sitting on. In fact, the snow is almost even with the porch. Amazing!As the day drew to a close... and the sun was beginning to peek out from behind the clouds, this is what we were left with. I'm thankful for Emile, Brie and Tara (Em's friend) for all the hard work they did today. They really were troopers. Just so everyone knows, their reward was homemade chicken corn soup (which was super yummy if I say so myself) and for dessert I made them funnel cakes. A little spoiling for all their efforts today.
Now we'll wait for the next storm... which is forecast to hit on Wednesday. Oh snap!
Just Breathe
I decided that since so many of my friends have spent time in the hospital lately, it would be cool to have a turn. Of course everyone loves the super cool hospital gowns... including yours truly. So I picked the most opportune time I could think of (1:30AM) to start having trouble breathing. Really smart of me, right? One problem, most people are asleep at that hour. I thought it would be rude to call for help... and tried to hang on as long as I could... which turned out to be more like 5AM. Now was the time to strike!!
Emile got up and called my sister, Cindy, who came immediately and took me to the ER. After a few theories (including a pulmonary embolism, heart attack, and/or congestive heart failure), the diagnosis is Interstitial Pneumonitis. Simply put it means there is an inflammation of the lung tissue. It is not asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia or that type of respiratory condition. It is a condition/sickness of the lung tissue itself.
Quick wrap up.... the chest X-ray on Monday was much better than the Sat baseline one. There was the possibility of having to have a lung biopsy, but that is on hold now since I'm responding to meds instead. I'm grateful for that. We'll see what the next couple of days/weeks brings. After 3 days in the hospital, I'm home and breathing better... although still very tired. I've had lots of help from friends and family. What would I do without everyone??? If anything changes, I'll post more later. For now, all is well.
Why I Believe
This evening the girls and I attended a fireside/BYD at the chapel. The theme was "Why I Believe." There were two speakers and the program lasted an hour. Short and sweet. For some reason I felt compelled to attend tonight.... I've also been thinking a lot about growing up in a "branch" in Arizona. For those who don't know much about the LDS Church, members are divided up into congregations which are called a "ward." There are so many wards in a "stake." A stake is part of a "region" and so forth on up to the main leadership in Salt Lake City, Utah. When there are members in an area but the numbers are too few to form a ward, this gathering of people are placed in a "branch." Such was the case when I was in 7th grade and living in the area of Dewey, Arizona.
When the leaders of the stake decided to start a new branch, we were split off from the Prescott ward and sent to Mayer. This was about 40 minutes or so east of Prescott. The church had a house which the missionaries lived in. That is where we met at first. The living room was the "chapel." The master bedroom became the Primary room. The closed in back porch was a classroom, as was half of the closed in front porch. The other bedroom was the Relief Society room. It was a very small house and we were few in numbers... perhaps 20 or so of us. It was so much fun though.
As our numbers grew, we obviously outgrew our house. The church purchased an old outdoor rodeo arena for us to use. Picture in your mind something along the lines of this.....Our new church was similar... with the exception there was no outdoor lighting. There was one large building with a big rock fireplace on one end, a ticket office at the other end, and on the back side we had our very own bar. Woo Hoo! The arena area was complete with fences and stock chutes. Very cool. Out back there was a... say 45ft. mobile home. There was no pavement anywhere... just lots of Arizona dust and tumble weeds. It was just perfect for our branch!
As time went by we converted the building into a wonderful place of worship. The building was divided almost in half with the end where the fireplace was becoming the chapel. Yes, we did use the fireplace to heat the building in the winter. How cool was that, to have Sacrament Meeting while feeling the warmth of the fire? I loved sitting by it. The ticket office become the Branch President's office. The bar became the library. We put up portable dividers which served as classrooms, and the trailer out back served as the Primary area. With the fences and chutes removed, the arena became the parking lot. This is the view we had from our little church in Dewey...It was positively beautiful! I loved that little branch and its members.
Out west, Pioneer Day (July 24th) is a huge event.... it's not even recognized here in the east (bummer) and our little branch always had an incredible celebration. There was pit cooking of pork & beef that Brother Pugh supervised... Dutch Oven beans, roasted corn on the cob, cornbread or biscuits...And of course apple pies, cherry pies, cakes, home made ice cream, and gallons of lemonade. We'd play horse shoes, have sack races, square dance, and just have a joyous time!
One year in particular, the weather on Pioneer Day had been terrible. We had heavy rains which caused flash flooding in our area. We were certain the celebration would be canceled. I was so sad when I thought of not going. As the time to leave got closer the rain continued. Brother and Sister Pugh arrived to pick me and Tony up. As we were driving to the church the rain lightened and by the time we arrived it had stopped completely. All afternoon and into the evening the sky remained dark and threatening, but the rain didn't start again. As the celebration drew to an end and we were bowing our heads for the closing prayer, I started to feel raindrops. By the time we got in the car it was pouring again.... and continued to do so all night long. I vividly remember thinking I had witnessed God's work in action. I knew the rain had been stopped long enough for us to remember and celebrate the saints arriving in the Salt Lake Valley so many years earlier. It was a wonderful feeling.
That is just one of the many reasons why I believe. I know God lives. I know my Savior atoned and died for me. I know I am here on earth at this time for a specific reason. I am comforted by the testimony I have that if I do my part God is duty bound to do his part. It's all up to me. I am ever thankful for the Gospel in my life. Am I perfect? Of course not. There will always be room for improvement. I just know if I do my best... if I continue trying to do what is right, my efforts will be accepted and I will be blessed.I look forward to the day when I stand before my Heavenly Father and hear him say "Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter into my kingdom."
Crappy Situation
So the other day Emile yelled down... "Where's the toilet paper?" to which I replied..."There's a roll in the basket beside the toilet." to which Brie commented..."No I took it out to put on the paper dispenser but it was all wet and had a dark black mark on it so I didn't use it." After a trip to the van to get out the new pack I had just bought, I decided I'd better investigate (although I really didn't want to).Sure enough, the carpet was wet (I know, who on earth puts carpet in their bathroom? The previous owner.. hopefully I'll be able to put in a new floor this spring) and I could feel water on the underneath the left side of the tank. I was able to figure out the problem was with the bolt that connects the tank to the bowl... but when I tried to tighten said bolt the drip got faster so I backed off. I REALLY hate dealing with these types of repairs! Even though I've gotten fairly good at fixing some things, I had no idea how to tackle this one. What did I do? I called my Home Teacher. Bless his heart, it was Brother Miles to the rescue.He arrived just after I got home from work last evening... supplies in hand, and got right to work. Before long he had replaced the gaskets and bolts and we turned the water back on. Shortly after he left, however, I discovered it's still leaking a tiny bit. With the new bolt in place, I think it's just a case of needing to tighten it a little more, which I'm going to try myself in a minute.I'm beginning to think that before I leave this mortal sphere, I will have learned more than I thought possible about home repairs. Knowledge is power. I'm sure it's not a bad thing that I'm learning more about joys of toilet repairs.
The End.
Holiday Highlights (A Little Late)
Posted by Picasa
Friend and family get togethers are the best! In the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Years we had the chance to have Cheri, Calvin and Rachel over for dinner. It was great to spend time with Cheri... especially since her move to Canada. Of course we spent Christmas afternoon and the next day with my brother, Corey, and his girlfriend, Michele. We all had fun. Then on Dec 30th we got together with John and Lesa and their family for soup, chili, and yummy treats. Tibbs and Tibbsette were there too! We played some board games and swapped stories. Another fun evening.
And then there were the Holiday Concerts. Both Emile and Brie are in concert band so we attended both the Middle and High School Concerts. Both were good (although I'm particular to the band portion of the concerts more than the chorus portion). The girls were thrilled when they were over. You know how kids are... "do we really have to do this???"
So another Christmas Holiday is over... before we know it we'll be posting similar stories next year. Until then... adios!
